Great Sleep Routines & Habits for Kids

Sleep is a vital part of everyone’s ability to function throughout the day and live a healthy life. As adults, we see the importance of sleep because we can easily see the effects from the lack of it. However, children are a whole other story! They need their sleep the most, and yet you wouldn’t always believe it when it’s time to put them down to bed. As the school year has kicked off, the newness may beignet wear down, but that’s when your child’s sleep is the most important. Here are a few ways you can set up a good sleep habit for your child, and create a routine that everyone enjoys.

First Things First

Before we start talking about sleep routines, here are a few things to know about the sleep requirements for kids of different ages.

Toddlers 1-2 Years: 11-14 hours
Preschoolers 3-5: 10-13 hours
School-aged Children 6-13: 9-11 hours
Teenagers 14-17 years: 8-10 hours

Tips for Better Sleep

Whether your kids aren’t on a good routine, or you just need to tweak it a bit, here are a few tips to help kids develop better sleep habits for your kids.

Keep A Routine

Having a good bedtime is essential, but you have probably already heard all about that. Starting with a bath, pajamas brushing teeth, reading a few pages from a book - these are all great options and you can customize the routine in any way that you would like. Whatever you make of the ritual, just make sure that it’s consistent so that your children know what to expect every night.

Cut Down on Electronics

It’s important to restrict electronics at least an hour before bed. This will include the computer, phone, and television. Electronic screen actives can be stimulating to the brain and interfere with falling and staying asleep.

Check the Temperature of the Room

Did you know that if a room is too warm, stuffy, or bright, it can make it hard for your children to fall asleep, as well as maintain sleep through the night? Keep the temperature low and invest in some better blackout curtains to help control the lighting in the room.

Make Time in the Evening to Visit

Grade schoolers especially need to get time with their parents. This is a great time to chat about their day, their interests, their friends. This can also be a time to let them get things off their chest, process, and problem solve - all things which will help create a space for better sleep!

Caffeine is in What??

It’s no surprise caffeine is in coffee and soda, but did you know that it can be hidden in other foods as well? Chocolate, many types of tea, and even some non-cola sodas. If it’s close to bedtime and your child gets hungry, try to find foods that aren’t caffeinated or high in sugar to help make sleep easier.

Create a Cozy Atmosphere

The more comfortable your kids are, the more relaxed they will be and the easier it will be for them to fall asleep. Comfortable mattresses can make a huge difference in keeping these rooms comfortable. Every Child Deserves a Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep is a vital aspect of any child's life. Sadly, many children around the Lake of the Ozarks don't get a good nights sleep. A number of kids don't even have their own bed to sleep on - they either share a bed or sleep on the floor. This is no way to get a good night's sleep! Slumberland Furniture in Osage Beach sees a need and has partnered with Scott's Concrete, along with the Bagnell Dam Board of Realtors and 93.5 Rocks the Lake to help meet that need. We're helping to provide at least 70 mattresses to local children.

Reasons Kids Deserve a Good Night's Sleep:

Promote Growth

Kids grow when they sleep. Getting the right amount of sleep can help a child grow as they should. Being short on sleep can put a strain on the body, making it difficult for the body to perform tasks as it should - like growing.

Helps with Attention Span

Getting enough sleep can help children have a longer attention span. This is vital, especially in a learning setting like school. It's important that a child can pay attention long enough to learn a lesson and be able to put it to use.

Healthy Heart

The body does a lot of work while a child is sleeping. While sleeping, a child's heart helps to pump blood throughout the entire body. A healthy heart is very important, even at a young age. Proper sleep can help keep a child's heart working as it should and circulating what it should when it should.

Boost Immune System

When a child sleeps, their body performs a number of healing tasks. As the body heals, it can help keep a kid healthy. Getting enough sleep can help keep a child's immune system up - which is very important, especially during the cold season of winter!

Better Mood

A child that gets adequate sleep is typically in a better mood than a sleep-deprived kid. A mood can have a big impact on a little person. A good mood can make it easier to learn and perform daily tasks. It can also help a child get along better with others - whether it's other kids or adults. Overall, a child in a good mood can help them live a better life.

If you're inspired to help area children get the good night's sleep they deserve, contact our Lake of the Ozarks furniture store to learn how you can help. Also, if you know of a child who is without their own bed, please call 573-302-4646. We'll do our best to ensure the kids have a comfortable place to rest their heads!

5 Ways Sleep Can Impact Your Life

Sleep is a big factor in many people's lives. The amount of sleep each person gets has a direct impact on many factors in their day to day life. As the best place to buy a mattress at the Lake of the Ozarks, we know how important sleep is! Take a look below to learn about the ways sleep can impact your life.

1) Boost Mood

People who get a good night's sleep tend to be happier. If you don't sleep well, you are likely to be more cranky. Sleeping well can help you be less irritable and create more positive interactions throughout your day. Your mood can have a direct impact on others and a good night's sleep can be good for everyone you interact with!

2) Stay on Track with Health

Sleep is an essential part of the bodies' daily function. This is a time for repair and many processes to take place. If you don't get adequate sleep, your body may not have time to properly function. A sleep-deprived person is more likely to overeat or choose the wrong foods to consume. A better sleep can help you make the right health decisions for your body.

3) Reduced Healing Time

Your body needs sleep to properly heal. Whether it's a sickness or injury, sleep is important to shorten your healing time. Getting a good night's sleep can help fend off a cold that may be going around. While there's no guarantee you won't get sick, you will likely recover more quickly and reduce your chance of getting sick in the first place if you sleep well.

4) Improve Focus

A well rested body and mind can focus on a task easier. Attention, concentration, and coordination are all impacted by the amount of sleep you get. Poor work and performance can be linked to lack of sleep. Set yourself up for success and get the recommended amount of sleep each night!

5) Boost Mental Health

Depression and anxiety are common side effects of not enough sleep. Try to keep your physical and mental body in balance by sleeping the recommended amount of time each night. This can help you have a more positive outlook on life and improve your mental health!

Do these sleep benefits sound good? Your mattress may be the first step to a good night's sleep! Stop by our furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks to see our wide selection. From size to material to comfort, we have a wide range of options available. Visit with our sales staff and we can help you find the perfect mattress for your sleep needs! Your Sleep Position Affects How Well You Sleep

Our sleep experts at Slumberland Furniture know lots of tips for getting the most restful night's sleep possible. Purchasing a new mattress from the best mattress store at the Lake of the Ozarks is only the first step. There are many other factors that figure in to your sleep quality, one of which is the position in which you sleep.

Your new Slumberland Furniture mattress will alleviate many sleep problems you may have had with an old mattress, but once you get it home, the position in which you choose to sleep can make a big difference too.

Position #1: Dead Man's Float
This is how we jokingly refer to stomach sleepers. In this position, your head will be turned to the side with arms to the sides near your head or under the pillow. Sleeping this way can ease snoring and some cases of sleep apnea.

 - THE PROBLEM: The weight of your body can compress your lungs, making it difficult to breathe deeply. Also, this position tends to hyper-flex the neck, exerting pressure on the nerves along the underside of your arms, causing a "pins and needles" sensation when you wake up

- THE SOLUTION: The best mattress for a stomach sleeper is a firm one. If this is you, you may also want to get rid of the pillow under your head. Instead, opt for a long body pillow that will support your entire body, or try placing a head pillow under your hips.

Position 2: The Soldier
This is when you sleep flat on your back, much like a little tin soldier. Your back is not forced to contort in any way, but remains straight, allowing the mattress to do its job and support your spine. This is also a great position because your face is not smashed into the pillow, lessening the chance of wrinkles.

- THE PROBLEM: This position can sometimes bring on snoring and cause sleep apnea. Lying on your back can cause your tongue to fall inwards and block breathing.

- THE SOLUTION: Position a pillow under your knees and another small one under your lower back. If you are a back-sleeper, purchasing an Adjustable Lifestyle Power Base foundation will allow you to elevate your upper and lower body at will.

Position 3: Sleeping Beauty
Side sleepers generally sleep with knees bent, back curled slightly, and with their arms folded. Sleeping on your left side improves circulation to the heart and can ease heartburn and acid reflux.

- THE PROBLEM: Other than the skin on your face getting smashed into the pillow, there are actually no other problems with this sleep position! It is one of the healthiest sleep positions to use because it complements the natural curve of the spine.

- THE SOLUTION: To make this position a little more comfortable, put a pillow between your knees to reduce the stress on your hips, back, and legs.

Now that you are aware of how different sleep positions can affect the quality of your sleep, give them each a try. If sleep position is not a problem, but you spend your nights tossing and turning because your mattress is old and worn out, visit us at the best furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks. We can help you find the perfect mattress for your sleep needs, and Slumberland Furniture can even outfit your entire bedroom if you are ready for a new look.

Resolve to Get Better Quality Sleep This Year

January gets most people thinking about what they want to do better than last year. The best mattress store at the Lake of the Ozarks can guarantee you that getting a good quality night's sleep is one of the best New Year's resolutions that you will ever make.  Slumberland Furniture is an expert when it comes to sleep, and the following tips will help you to improve your own.  The result will be a life that is more productive, energized, and healthier.

Get comfortable.

One very important key to getting a quality night's sleep is your mattress.  If you wake up stiff, numb, or achy often, or if your mattress is more than 10 years old, it's time for a new one.  When mattress shopping, bring along your favorite pillow and try out the mattresses that you are interested in.  The perfect one should offer proper back and body support for your sleep style.

Calm your senses.

You get a much better night's sleep if the room is cool.  A temperature of about 67 degrees is ideal.  The darker the room the better.  Blackout curtains or a sleep mask can help with this.  Certain calming scents, such as lavender, can help lull you into slumber too.

Unplug

Checking your cell phone or watching TV before bad is a habit that you should try to break.  Digital screens can cause your body to want to stay awake.  Turn all electronics off at least 2 hours before you plan to go to sleep to give your mind and body time to wind down.

Watch your food and drink intake.

You should also do your best to stop eating at least 2-3 hours before bedtime, but don't go to bed hungry either.  If you must eat, have a light snack like a banana or a bowl of cereal.  Avoid alcohol before sleeping.  It may make you drowsy, but it may affect the quality of your sleep.  Caffeine intake can cause a lot of people to stay awake.  If that is you, try not to have any after noon.

Beware long naps.

Sleeping too much during the day can cause you to have trouble sleeping through the night.  Naps are most helpful if you limit them to 20-30 minutes and take them early in the day.

Develop a routine.

Doing the same thing every night before you go to bed develops a routine, cuing the body that it is time to sleep.  If you need help winding down from the day's activities, good things to add to your routine are writing in a journal, meditating, or reading.

All of these tips will aid you in reaching a full night of deep, restful sleep.  The best mattress store at the Lake of the Ozarks believes that getting a good night's sleep is a wise New Year's resolution to make, and an extremely important one to keep. Slumberland Furniture in Osage Beach can offer you the mattresses, pillows, and bedding for a great night of sleep.  Developing a routine and sticking to it is up to you.  We know you can do it!

Get Comfortable - It's Sleep Comfort Month!

November is Sleep Comfort Month.  That's pretty important to us here at the best mattress store at the Lake of the Ozarks.  We promote comfortable sleep every day of the year, but November gives us an extra excuse to really bring the importance of a good night's sleep to light.  We have compiled a few tips from a variety of our past blogs to help you achieve the most comfortable night of sleep that you can possibly get.

The Mattress

If you have trouble sleeping at night or wake up feeling tired or sore, then you may need a new mattress.  If your mattress is over 10 years old, then you definitely need a new mattress.  Our sleep specialists know how to help you shop for the perfect mattress.  When you come to Slumberland Furniture in Osage Beach, be prepared for a test rest.  Bring your favorite pillow along with you and try out the mattresses that draw your interest.  You should spend at least 5 minutes on each mattress to really get a feel for it.

The Mattress Protector

It may not add noticeable comfort to your sleeping experience, but it will definitely add piece of mind.  A mattress protector isn't only there to keep spills off or your mattress.  It keeps moisture like perspiration from soaking in.  It also keeps dust mites and other allergens from making a home inside your mattress.  You can stay comfortable while you sleep knowing that your mattress protector can be thrown in the washing machine whenever it needs to be freshened up.  It's not so simple to wash that stuff out of a mattress!

The Pillows

If neck problems are present every day when you wake up, it may be time to buy a new pillow. Much like mattress shopping, you will need to figure out what materials you are most comfortable with.  The position in which you sleep also figures into which type of pillow is the best for you.  If you don't always sleep in the same position night after night, you might think about buying a few different pillows. That way, you are covered for however you feel like sleeping on a particular evening.

The Bed

Another thing that figures into your comfort is how you feel when you enter your bedroom.  If you have let yourself choose a beautiful bedroom set along with linens in your favorite colors and style, you will feel better about going in for a good night's sleep.  The bed that you pick out should be big enough to give you plenty of room to sleep comfortably.  If you toss and turn a lot naturally, go for that king size bed.  Of course, if you have taken our past advice on how to pick the perfect mattress, you probably won't be tossing and turning.

Your Sleep Habits

We cannot stress enough the importance of a good night's sleep!  There are a few things that you should get in the habit of doing.  Do your best to stick to a steady sleep schedule.  The ideal hours for sleep are between 10 pm and 6 am.  Whenever you decide to go to sleep and wake up, strive to get at least 8 hours a night.  Don't go to bed hungry, but try to stop eating at least 2-3 hours before you lay down for the night.  Also, the darker the room, the better the sleep.

Come on in to the best furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks and let us help you find everything that you need for the most comfortable night of sleep possible. Slumberland Furniture prides itself on being experts in this area.  Your sleep comfort is very important to us.  It is a key factor in you being able to live a good life!

The Importance of a Good Night's Sleep for Children

A good night's sleep is very important for everyone, no matter what your age, but it is especially beneficial for children.  Sleep affects both mental ability and physical growth.  Even with enough sleep, if your child has an old or poor-quality mattress, this will affect them in a negative way.  The best mattress store at the Lake of the Ozarks has some information for you about the quality of good sleep for children, and advice on how to make sure that they get it.

The reasons for a good night's sleep.

The recommended amount of sleep for everyone is:

  • 7 hours for adults
  • 9-10 hours for teens
  • 10-12 hours for younger children

This can be difficult to fit in between busy schedules full of school, practices, games, lessons, etc...  Still, you need to make the time.  Sleep allows a body the chance to regenerate cells, repair muscles, and recalibrate hormone levels.  Lack of sleep, or poor sleep, affects your child in many ways.

Mental Ability
The quality and quantity of sleep greatly affects a child's ability to understand and retain information, and also to concentrate.

Physical growth
The possibility of obesity increases when proper sleep is not achieved.  Also, a bad mattress can affect your child's bone strength and posture.

Emotional Stability
Not getting enough good sleep can leave children feeling depressed, which can lead to behavioral problems.

How to get a good night's sleep.

There are a few things that you can be doing to help your child get the amount of quality sleep that their body needs.

Limit access to electronics.
At least 1-2 hours before turning in for the night, your child should turn off ALL electronics (video games, TV, cell phones, computers...).  These things keep the brain stimulated, which disrupts the sleep cycle.  If electronics can be kept out of the bedroom completely, that will help with this effort.

Stick to a set bedtime routine.
Doing your best to make sure that your child goes to bed and wakes up at the same time every day will train their body into this routine.  Stay as close as possible to these set times, even on the weekends, and your children will benefit.

Be a good role model.
Children model the behavior that they see.  As hard as it may be, following the same rules for your own sleep will make your child more likely to follow them too.  An added benefit is that your own sleep quality will also improve, making everyday life a little easier and more enjoyable.

Make sure they have a good, quality mattress.
A full night's sleep doesn't do the most good that it can if your child is trying to get that sleep on a bad mattress.  Slumberland Furniture is an expert at helping people find the right mattress for their body types and lifestyles.  Here are a few tips for finding the perfect one for your child.

  • Determine the right size.
Even if your baby's crib converts to a toddler bed, a new mattress may be needed for this stage of their life.  Consider how tall you expect your older child to grow and aim for a mattress and bed size that they are unlikely to outgrow.
  • Find the right support.
Bring your child with you when you mattress shop for them.  Letting them try out the different types of mattresses can avoid complaints later.  The best for kids is usually a mattress with at least 225 coils and a gauge of 13.
  • Explore materials.
The most common children's mattresses are made from innerspring coils, but memory foam, latex foam, and pillowtop mattresses are all good options too.
  • Make it durable.
Kids love to jump on beds, so their mattress needs to be sturdy.  A mattress protector will help extend it's life by helping to keep any spills off of it.
  • Consider allergies.
A synthetic-filled mattress is a good choice for a child that is prone to allergies. Microbial mattress covers are also available.

The better the quality of your child's sleep, the better they can grow both physically and emotionally.  The best furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks knows how to help you and your family get the best night's sleep possible.  Stop by our Osage Beach furniture store soon and let us talk to you about your options for both mattresses and great children's bedroom furniture.
