How To Shop For The Perfect Mattress

Before you venture out mattress shopping, there are just a few things that you should do to prepare.  These will help to make the entire experience go quickly, smoothly, and to your best advantage.

Know your dimensions.

If you are purchasing a new bed from your local Slumberland store, we can help you out with this step. If you are needing a new mattress to fit into a bed that you already own, come to the store prepared with a little information. Measure your bed frame, and measure your current mattress. Modern bed sizes are pretty standard, but mattresses can vary in size plus or minus 1/2 an inch, depending on the manufacturer. Here are the standard mattress measurements.

• Single: 39” wide x 75” long
• Double: 54” wide by 75” long
• Queen: 60” wide by 80” long
• King: 76” wide by 80” long
• California king: 72” wide by 84” long

BYOP—Bring Your Own Pillow.

We have pillows for you to use if you don't bring your own, but this can help to simulate a regular night of sleep for you. Ask us for a quality sleep pillow to borrow while you are here instead of using the pillow that is on display with the mattress. It is generally just for show, advertising the manufacturer.

Prepare for a "test rest."

We always suggest that you spend at least 5 minutes on a mattress that you are seriously interested in. Climb on up and get into your usual sleeping position. This gives you a little time to see how your body will adjust to the mattress after you settle in. No need to feel embarrassed at all. We encourage everyone to test out the merchandise and would be hurt if you didn't feel comfortable enough to get comfortable. 

Dress comfortably.

You should be climbing in and out of beds while you are searching for the perfect mattress, so wear something that you are comfortable in. We don't expect you to show up in your pajamas, but do pick out something easy to move around in.

Ask questions.

Here are a few questions that you may want to ask your Slumberland sales representative. 

• Does this mattress offer proper back and body support?
• Does it minimize tossing and turning? How?
• What are its best features and benefits?
• Will it support my sleep positions and patterns, as well as those of my sleep partner?
• What are some similar mattresses at both higher and lower price points?
