Ways to Prepare Your Home for Winter

At Slumberland Furniture, we know how important your home is to you. Whether you live full-time at the Lake or you have a vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks, it’s still important to consider who your home will fair through the winter and get it prepared. While we focus on the indoors through beautiful furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks, we know that the outdoors is just as important. Here are a few tips to help get your home ready for the impending winter cold and weather.

Install Weatherstripping

It’s time to check your home’s exterior doors for cold air leaks. You’ll start from the inside of the house, and you can move a lit candle around door frames and windows. If the flame blows toward you, then there is a draft. You can seal up drafty doors by installing foam or felt weatherstripping inside the door frame.

Seal Attic Leaks

Do you know that as much as 30% of your heated or cooled air could be leaking outdoors? It’s time to find and seal the gaps that are allowing your “paid air” to escape. You can pull back the attic insulation to find and seal cutouts in drywall for the electrical fixtures, pipes, fans, and outlets. You can also look at your wiring, chimneys, flues, vent stacks, and ducts, and seal them from the inside.

Close the Damper

If you leave the fireplace damper open, the heated or cooled air will fly up the chimney. Make it a habit to always shut the flue after the fireplace has cooled down. As the temperatures get colder, you’ll probably be using your fireplace more, so this can be a really easy task to forget.

This is a task that is best left to the professionals, but if you haven’t checked the attic insulation in a while, or you don’t even know when it was installed last - this could be a good year to make sure that it’s up to speed. So much warm air can seep out of your home through the attic.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Did you know that a programmable thermostat can save up to $180 a year on fuel costs, according to EnergyStar? The thermostat can save fuel because it can automatically lower or raise your one’s temperature while you’re away. It can also keep your temperatures consistent, saving fuel.

Seal Furnace Ducts

Your heating ducts can waste 20-30% of the heated air they carry. Leaky heating ducts mean higher utility bills and a house that’s harder to keep warm. The appliances like water heaters and furnaces can cause the buildup of dangerous gases like carbon monoxide through back-drafting. Sealing the leaks can reduce the risk, but you will want to check with professionals before digging in.

Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

When the weather gets cold and you use your furnace, it’s time to reverse your fan blades in a clockwise direction. The fan will produce an updraft and push the heated air down into the room. If you have high vaulted ceilings (which are incredibly common at the Lake), you may find that this can even allow you to turn down your thermostat by a degree or two for greater energy savings!
