Ways to Prepare Your Home for Winter

At Slumberland Furniture, we know how important your home is to you. Whether you live full-time at the Lake or you have a vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks, it’s still important to consider who your home will fair through the winter and get it prepared. While we focus on the indoors through beautiful furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks, we know that the outdoors is just as important. Here are a few tips to help get your home ready for the impending winter cold and weather.

Install Weatherstripping

It’s time to check your home’s exterior doors for cold air leaks. You’ll start from the inside of the house, and you can move a lit candle around door frames and windows. If the flame blows toward you, then there is a draft. You can seal up drafty doors by installing foam or felt weatherstripping inside the door frame.

Seal Attic Leaks

Do you know that as much as 30% of your heated or cooled air could be leaking outdoors? It’s time to find and seal the gaps that are allowing your “paid air” to escape. You can pull back the attic insulation to find and seal cutouts in drywall for the electrical fixtures, pipes, fans, and outlets. You can also look at your wiring, chimneys, flues, vent stacks, and ducts, and seal them from the inside.

Close the Damper

If you leave the fireplace damper open, the heated or cooled air will fly up the chimney. Make it a habit to always shut the flue after the fireplace has cooled down. As the temperatures get colder, you’ll probably be using your fireplace more, so this can be a really easy task to forget.

Insulate the Attic (More!)

This is a task that is best left to the professionals, but if you haven’t checked the attic insulation in a while, or you don’t even know when it was installed last - this could be a good year to make sure that it’s up to speed. So much warm air can seep out of your home through the attic.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Did you know that a programmable thermostat can save up to $180 a year on fuel costs, according to EnergyStar? The thermostat can save fuel because it can automatically lower or raise your one’s temperature while you’re away. It can also keep your temperatures consistent, saving fuel.

Seal Furnace Ducts

Your heating ducts can waste 20-30% of the heated air they carry. Leaky heating ducts mean higher utility bills and a house that’s harder to keep warm. The appliances like water heaters and furnaces can cause the buildup of dangerous gases like carbon monoxide through back-drafting. Sealing the leaks can reduce the risk, but you will want to check with professionals before digging in.

Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

When the weather gets cold and you use your furnace, it’s time to reverse your fan blades in a clockwise direction. The fan will produce an updraft and push the heated air down into the room. If you have high vaulted ceilings (which are incredibly common at the Lake), you may find that this can even allow you to turn down your thermostat by a degree or two for greater energy savings!

Deck the Halls in Style - Check Out These Christmas Themes!

As the holiday season approaches, it’s time to pull out the decorations and turn your Lake of the Ozarks home into a winter wonderland! As you gear up for the season, one of the biggest decisions may be which type of holiday theme you will stick with this year, so we’re covering some of the HOT trends this year! Check out these holiday styles, and don’t forget to tell us which you will be using this year.

Winter White

It’s time to create a winter wonderland in your home! Complete the look with all sorts of glittering foliage, metallic accents, and be sure to capture the enchantment of a snowy Christmas morning. This is the perfect combination of vintage, pure white, and a bit of classic Christmas to make your spirits bright.

Nordic Frost

If you are looking for the epitome of the Christmas spirit, you will find it in this Christmas theme. Take some inspiration from the very understated and elegant Scandinavia design. Focus on colors like red, white, and silver, and include all things frosted and snowy. A few vintage, rustic Santa Clause figurines and you will be set - and don’t forget rustic pinecones!

Grand Forest

It’s time to set the scene for your holiday spirit. It’s enchanting with earth tones and plenty of golden hues. Imagine that you are in a charming woodland - but you can still keep this classic and luxurious without spreading into farmhouse or country Christmas. Plenty of bright green boughs across your mantle, and a large evergreen tree taking center stage in front of your large Lakeview windows.

Christmas Cheer

This is a combination of all things red and green - with plenty of gold to boot. It’s the class Christmas and a timeless holiday style. A bit of vintage, a lot of the classics, and even more red velvet scattered around your home. From the stockings to the Christmas tree skirt, everything is red, plush, and luxurious. Ornamental red and gold floral arrangements, large ribbons gracing the boughs of your tree, and you will be set!

Silver & Gold

We all know what song is playing in your head right at this moment! Imagine a theme infused with luxury, while also combining the intricate embellishments of silver and gold hues. You can go all out with the accessories, looking for anything intricate, stylish, and bright.

Christmas at the Biltmore

This Christmas can be a season of warmth and wonder when you style it after one of the nation's largest and most influential homes. It’s all about elegance with metallic ornaments, gilded accents, and all things rich and exquisite. Trade out the bright Christmas reds for a deep, dark burgundy, instead of a fresh, crisp white, opt for creamier tones - and don’t forget the gold.

Farmhouse Christmas

The farmhouse style is always a safe and easy choice, as it’s still incredibly trendy. You can combine rustic and elegance into your holiday home, as well as classic hues of red and green. You also can’t go wrong with plenty of plaids!

Christmas Cabin

This varies from the farmhouse style because you will be including plenty of nostalgia and a sprinkle of Christmas cheer. Imagine what Christmas at Grandma’s house was like, and then go from there. It’s all about classic holiday colors, vintage-inspired décor, and everything Christmas past.

French Country

Combining posh and romantic flair, your Christmas decor can be infused with luxury when you style it after the French-inspired Christmases. Golds, champagne, and ivory will be your color pallet. Instead of choosing bright green, opt for a darker, more dramatic shade in your tree and other greenery. Intricate designs, bold floral arrangements in pure white tones, and glittery white and silver accents are going to perfect this style.

Winter Wishes

A magical and feminine Christmas is in order when you make this dream come to life. Sparkling accents, romantic roses, and plenty of delicate touches throughout will make the most of the feminine Christmas style. Imagine a Victorian tea house all dolled up for Christmas, and you will have the dainty, pure style of this theme.

Georgetown

Are you looking for something unique? This style is perfection. Create a laid-back Christmas with a bit of a coastal theme when you decorate in shades of navy, copper, and turquoise. Opt for more rustic elements, like brown wicker baskets, but you can still incorporate flourishes of extravagance with vintage ornaments, glittering ribbons, and gorgeous accents.

Christmas At the Lake of the Ozarks

If you’ve always dreamt of celebrating Christmas in your vacation home, this is the year to do it! Your lake home will always be your summer getaway, but there can be something special about transporting the magic of Christmas to the place where you make so many fun and magical memories. Whether you’ll be celebrating the holidays here or there - we hope that you get to take time to make your home a magical place for your family and friends. Share your pictures with us! Our furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks would love to see what themes and styles you choose to decorate your homes with!

Slumberland Mattress Giveaway in December 2019

One of the best things about the Lake of the Ozarks is how quickly and easily they come together to bless the people around them. There are so many amazing outreaches and groups that you can volunteer your time with, and make a huge impact on your neighbor. One huge need we’ve noticed over the years has been the lack of beds for children of the Lake area. Some kids are sharing beds or even sleeping on the floor because there just aren’t enough resources. We believe in a good night’s sleep - so we’re hosting the annual mattress giveaway with our friends at Scott’s Concrete, and 93.5 is going to be helping us get the word out!

Here are a few things you need to know about the importance of sleep in children, the basics of kids sleep, statistics, AND, how Slumberland aims to make a change.

Why Is Sleep So Important?

Most kids have incredibly busy days, from school to after school activities, and even late nights doing homework. By the end of your day, your body needs a break, and sleep allows the body to rest for the next day.

Your body and your brain both need the sleep, and while no one is exactly sure what work your brain is doing while you are sleeping, some scientists believe that the brain sorts through and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems while you catch some zzz's.

Most kids between 5 and 12 get about 9.5 hours of sleep a night, but many experts believe that children need between 10 and 11 hours of sleep each night. When children aren’t getting enough rest, it’s not uncommon to feel tired, cranky, and unable to think clearly. Some may have trouble following directions, others may not even be able to follow school assignments that would normally be easy for them.

The Problem and the Solution

Slumberland at the Lake of the Ozarks opened in 2008, and that same year, we realized the great need for mattresses for kids across the Ozarks. In so many households across our community, children are sleeping on floors or sofas, and many are even sharing those small spaces with siblings. If anyone understands and values the impact of sleep, it’s Slumberland - which is why it’s our goal to get children sleeping comfortably in a mattress and off of the floor.

We are so proud to partner with Scott’s Concrete to make this dream a reality, or maybe we want to keep it a dream, the kinds of dreams kids have when they are in a comfortable bed getting a good night’s sleep. They have been teaming up with us since 2014, and together we rely on the community to help get us the referrals and phone numbers for families where children aren’t in ideal sleeping situations.

The best news of all is that this year we will be donating ONE HUNDRED mattresses in December!

How You Can Help

The biggest need we have right now is for the names and numbers of families with children who need beds. This Christmas season, if you know children in need of a bed, we want to help. You can contact 573-302-4646 and we will take care of the rest! What better way to give back to your community than by making sure that the kids, the next generation, are able to focus on their school and activities because of a good night’s sleep! ’Tis the season to start getting those numbers in, so be sure to give us a call!

More Than a Turkey on the Table

The season of thankfulness and food is upon us. The days are getting colder, the nights are getting longer, and before you know it - you’ll start to see the family gathering. Gathering around the dinner table at your Lake of the Ozarks home is a pastime, and the perfect way to make the most out of the dark evenings. Whether this includes playing games around the table or indulging in a delicious meal together, the month of November is dedicated to gathering and being thankful. As you prepare for the winter season and the Thanksgiving holiday, now is the perfect time to get your table decorated!

Here at Slumberland at the Lake, we love to help our favorite fans make their home beautiful, welcoming, and even make a few statements! Here are a few tips for decorating your Thanksgiving dining room table at the Lake of the Ozarks over the next few weeks. Be sure to share your creations with us - we can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Cozy & Casual

If you are looking to create a comfortable and casual look with your dining room table, there are some incredible options out there. You can cover your chairs in plush and comfortable textures to give them that elevated feel. You can dress the table with a variety of relaxed patterns like stripes or minimized polka dots. Cloth napkins are always a must, as they take the feel of your table up several notches. A few simple place cards, some flameless candles, no-fuss foliage casually laid down the runner and a simple bowl with pumpkins can be a really relaxed way to make your table shine.

Make it White

As we move into the winter months, white is a classic, clean look that will really make your Thanksgiving themes pop! You can coordinate white and gray plates for the table setting and complete them with a folded white cloth napkin. Simple greenery running down the center of the table complete with a variety of faux and real white pumpkins can really set the stage for sophistication and glamor. It’s fresh with the green and white, but also has an incredibly classy touch.

Pumpkins Galore

You’ll notice in a lot of trending styles that pumpkins are all of the rage when it comes to table settings. This includes pumpkins of every color, so if you aren’t a fan of orange, you can still grace your table with these charming fall-themed gourds. This look can be a bit quirky and classic, but piling small pumpkins all down the center of your dining room table in a variety of colors like soft blue, bronze, matte black, cream, and white can be the perfect touch. The place settings can be kept simple with black and white plates, one being more ornate and the other being basic and even matte. Plan for earthy tones in the place settings, and don’t forget seasonal herbs tied in twine for every plate.

Lake Luxury

No table styling would be complete without a nautical theme! The unexpected use of blue and white as your focal colors is as surprising as it is beautiful. A casual blue and white striped fabric runner starts the look, but it’s brought together with the natural brown seagrass placements and the wooden candelabras. Complete the look by adding dainty white pumpkins on every plate - whether they be real, faux, or surprise bowls for the table setting. The soft blues, whites, browns, and touches of greenery running down the center create a lovely look that will complement your lake home beautifully.

Gathering the Family

As you make plans for Thanksgiving, start counting heads and make sure that you have enough seating for everyone. If you find that you need a larger table to accommodate your growing family - we have some incredibly beautiful pieces with your name on them! Let our team of experts help you find the table of your dreams and have it in your home before the holiday. If you already have a table from Slumberland, share your centerpiece pictures with us on social media!! We want to see ALL of the beautiful creations from you!

It's a good life!
