Slumberland Mattress Giveaway in December 2019

One of the best things about the Lake of the Ozarks is how quickly and easily they come together to bless the people around them. There are so many amazing outreaches and groups that you can volunteer your time with, and make a huge impact on your neighbor. One huge need we’ve noticed over the years has been the lack of beds for children of the Lake area. Some kids are sharing beds or even sleeping on the floor because there just aren’t enough resources. We believe in a good night’s sleep - so we’re hosting the annual mattress giveaway with our friends at Scott’s Concrete, and 93.5 is going to be helping us get the word out!

Here are a few things you need to know about the importance of sleep in children, the basics of kids sleep, statistics, AND, how Slumberland aims to make a change.

Why Is Sleep So Important?

Most kids have incredibly busy days, from school to after school activities, and even late nights doing homework. By the end of your day, your body needs a break, and sleep allows the body to rest for the next day.

Your body and your brain both need the sleep, and while no one is exactly sure what work your brain is doing while you are sleeping, some scientists believe that the brain sorts through and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems while you catch some zzz's.

Most kids between 5 and 12 get about 9.5 hours of sleep a night, but many experts believe that children need between 10 and 11 hours of sleep each night. When children aren’t getting enough rest, it’s not uncommon to feel tired, cranky, and unable to think clearly. Some may have trouble following directions, others may not even be able to follow school assignments that would normally be easy for them.

The Problem and the Solution

Slumberland at the Lake of the Ozarks opened in 2008, and that same year, we realized the great need for mattresses for kids across the Ozarks. In so many households across our community, children are sleeping on floors or sofas, and many are even sharing those small spaces with siblings. If anyone understands and values the impact of sleep, it’s Slumberland - which is why it’s our goal to get children sleeping comfortably in a mattress and off of the floor.

We are so proud to partner with Scott’s Concrete to make this dream a reality, or maybe we want to keep it a dream, the kinds of dreams kids have when they are in a comfortable bed getting a good night’s sleep. They have been teaming up with us since 2014, and together we rely on the community to help get us the referrals and phone numbers for families where children aren’t in ideal sleeping situations.

The best news of all is that this year we will be donating ONE HUNDRED mattresses in December!

How You Can Help

The biggest need we have right now is for the names and numbers of families with children who need beds. This Christmas season, if you know children in need of a bed, we want to help. A Child's Room to Grow With Them

You can save yourself a lot of time and money in the long run if you design a young child's room to grow along with them.  Children's bedroom furniture that works well for both a toddler and eventually a teenager is not that difficult to come by.
