Spring Cleaning Tips for the Entire House

Spring cleaning is the perfect opportunity to open your windows, let in the fresh air, and give your home a good deep-cleaning. Slumberland Furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks has a list of the main areas in your house to tackle.

The purpose of spring cleaning is to take the time to deep-clean the areas that tend to get passed over during your regular weekly cleaning routine. It's also a great time to get rid of all of those things that no longer get used and make room for fresh, new items.

As a general rule, always start at the top of a room and work your way down to the floor. You will find a few natural cleaning alternatives in a past blog of ours. Now for the areas to pay special attention to, room by room.

Living Room
The following tasks for cleaning the living room also apply to the other rooms in the house. Those other rooms have a few extra things to take care of in addition to the following.
  • Clean ceiling fans and light fixtures.
  • Dust wall hangings. If they are behind glass, use glass cleaner.
  • Vacuum curtains and window blinds.
  • Vacuum all furniture and cushions.
  • Clean windows, inside and out. Choose a nice day when you can leave them open and air out the house that has been closed up all winter at the same time.
  • Polish wood furniture with a mix of 1/2-tablespoon olive oil and 1/2-cup of vinegar or lemon juice. Apply with a spray bottle and rub in a circular motion.
  • Wipe baseboards, door frames, and walls with a damp cloth. Do not use any type of cleaner that could remove paint.
  • Rent a carpet/upholstery cleaner and deep clean away all of that winter dirt buildup. Move furniture slightly and place the legs on top of small wax paper squares. This will both protect the carpet and keep the furniture from getting wet. You may want to hire a professional to take care of this for you.

Bedroom
  • Rotate the mattresses. This allows the wear on it to distribute evenly over time. If your mattress is more than 10 years old, it may be time to replace it completely.
  • Empty dresser drawers and wipe them down. Only put back the clothes that you want to keep, and donate the rest. Do the same thing with your closet.
  • Wash all blankets, comforters, bed skirts, mattress pads, and other items that have been used often over the winter.

Kitchen
  • Empty cabinets and the pantry. Vacuum, then wipe it down well and throw away any old or expired items.
  • Do the same with the refrigerator. Vacuum the condenser coils so that it runs at its best.
  • Clean out the dishwasher. Do this by filling a cup with plain vinegar and place it on the top rack of the dishwasher. Run it on the hottest setting. When that is done, sprinkle baking soda around the bottom and run another cycle with hot water.
  • Clean the oven either on its self-cleaning setting or mix a paste of baking soda and water to coat the inside of the oven. Do not put it on bare metal and heating elements. Let the paste sit overnight, then scrape it off with a spatula in the morning.

Bathroom
  • Wipe vents and fans with a damp cloth and clean light fixtures.
  • A mixture of 1/2-cup ammonia, 1/2-cup baking soda, and 1 gallon of water will give the tile in your tub and shower a good, deep clean.
  • Remove any frayed bath towels and either throw them away or use them for rags in the garage, for your pets, or other extra-dirty cleaning tasks.
  • Get rid of old or expired medications, makeup, and other bathroom products.

Home Office
  • Dust all equipment: printer, fax machine, scanner, etc...
  • Take stock of office supplies. Throw away or donate any unnecessary items, and make a list of those that need to be replaced.
  • Shred any documents that need to be disposed of. File any loose ones that need to be saved.
  • Clean your virtual space. A computer can get even more cluttered than your actual office. Delete any files, photos, emails, and other items that do not need to be taking up space on your computer, phone, or tablet.

Now that you have everything cleaned up you've gotten rid of the old, it's time to bring in the new! Our Lake of the Ozarks furniture store has a wide variety of wonderful furniture pieces, mattresses, and home accent items to fill up any areas of your home that need a pick-me-up.

The Benefits of Duvet Covers on Your Bed

Slumberland Furniture in Osage Beach not only offers you the best furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks, but we also carry many wonderful accent items to decorate your rooms with. Our bed linens in particular are the perfect way to add beauty and personality to your bedroom.

We offer an incredible assortment of duvet sets that will fit beautifully into any decorating style. Occasionally, people don't spend a lot of time worrying about the look of their bedroom. They tend to concentrate on the more public areas that are seen by guests most often. A bedroom is your private sanctuary, where you spend a lot of your time. It deserves a little special attention.

You may be unclear on the difference between a comforter and a duvet. In the United States, both words are often used to describe what is technically a comforter.  A comforter is a one-piece, thick, quilted blanket. A duvet is a type of bedding described as a soft, flat bag filled with the insides of a blanket. This "bag" is then placed inside a duvet cover.

A comforter is often too large to throw into a regular washing machine, and may require a trip to the laundromat's large capacity washer when it needs to be cleaned. A duvet makes quick-cleaning much simpler, because you only need to remove the thin cover and wash it. Think of the duvet cover like a pillowcase. The duvet cover also eliminates the need for a top sheet if you like, because you don't have to worry about getting the duvet itself dirty.

Another great bonus of owning a duvet rather than a comforter is that you can change the look of your bedroom without buying a brand new blanket. Simply switching out the cover with each season, or whenever you feel the need for a change, can make it look and feel like a brand new room.

Slumberland Furniture has luxurious duvet sets availabe. These sets include the duvet and duvet cover, and many also include shams and accent pillows. If you are ready for a new look in your bedroom, head on over to our Lake of the Ozarks mattress store. While you are here, you may even find a few extra accent items that will make your bedroom the relaxing sanctuary you can't wait to end your day in.

10 Tips for Choosing the Right Rug for Your Room

Area rugs are wonderful for adding comfort and character to a room. Slumberland Furniture carries a vast assortment of beautiful rugs to match every type of home decorating style. Some like to think of area rugs as a piece of artwork for the floor.

Our Lake of the Ozarks furniture store offers a wide array of sizes, colors, textures, and styles of luxurious rugs to decorate your home. Knowing which ones are appealing to you is the easy part. Figuring out if it will look good in the room you want to place it in can be difficult. The following tips will help make that decision a lot easier for you.

#1 - One general rule to follow is that rugs should be no closer than 6 inches away from walls, but no further away than 2 feet.

#2 - Very large rooms may need more than one rug in the space. It is okay to mix patterns, but make sure the colors coordinate. Try different sizes, and don't be afraid to layer them. This trick makes the room feel dynamic and intimate.

#3 - Choosing a dark rug for a large room can make it seem cozier.

#4 - If you are putting a rug in a small room, lighter colors without texture can make the room appear larger.

#5 - Go bold if you want the rug to be your room's focal point. A solid-colored rug is better if you want more attention focused on another area or piece of furniture.

#6 - Plain rugs don't have to be boring. Pick one that has an interesting texture to make it more compelling.

#7 - Heavily detailed patterns on rugs are your best bet for high traffic areas. These are the least likely to show dirt and wear.

#8 - Rugs placed underneath beds are best when they extend 3 feet on each side, so no matter which side of the bed you wake up on, you have something soft and comfy to step on.

#9 - In a living room, a rug should be the same width as your sofa.

#10 - Under a dining room table, you want the rug large enough that chairs don't get caught on it when they are pushed back. It should be 24 inches larger than the table, and it should also be the same shape as your tabletop.

The rugs that we sell at Slumberland Furniture are not only a beautiful addition to any room, but they are also made to last. A rug pad ins't a necessity, but using one does have benefits. Pads can prevent the rug from slipping, absorb sound, and lengthen the life of the rug. Another tip for extending the lifetime of your rug is to rotate it every six months so that it wears evenly.

Stop by the best furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks soon and let us show you exactly how much an area rug can improve the look of any room. We also feature many other wonderful home accent pieces that will showcase your home's personality.

Your Sleep Position Affects How Well You Sleep

Our sleep experts at Slumberland Furniture know lots of tips for getting the most restful night's sleep possible. Purchasing a new mattress from the best mattress store at the Lake of the Ozarks is only the first step. There are many other factors that figure in to your sleep quality, one of which is the position in which you sleep.

Your new Slumberland Furniture mattress will alleviate many sleep problems you may have had with an old mattress, but once you get it home, the position in which you choose to sleep can make a big difference too.

Position #1: Dead Man's Float
This is how we jokingly refer to stomach sleepers. In this position, your head will be turned to the side with arms to the sides near your head or under the pillow. Sleeping this way can ease snoring and some cases of sleep apnea.

 - THE PROBLEM: The weight of your body can compress your lungs, making it difficult to breathe deeply. Also, this position tends to hyper-flex the neck, exerting pressure on the nerves along the underside of your arms, causing a "pins and needles" sensation when you wake up

- THE SOLUTION: The best mattress for a stomach sleeper is a firm one. If this is you, you may also want to get rid of the pillow under your head. Instead, opt for a long body pillow that will support your entire body, or try placing a head pillow under your hips.

Position 2: The Soldier
This is when you sleep flat on your back, much like a little tin soldier. Your back is not forced to contort in any way, but remains straight, allowing the mattress to do its job and support your spine. This is also a great position because your face is not smashed into the pillow, lessening the chance of wrinkles.

- THE PROBLEM: This position can sometimes bring on snoring and cause sleep apnea. Lying on your back can cause your tongue to fall inwards and block breathing.

- THE SOLUTION: Position a pillow under your knees and another small one under your lower back. If you are a back-sleeper, purchasing an Adjustable Lifestyle Power Base foundation will allow you to elevate your upper and lower body at will.

Position 3: Sleeping Beauty
Side sleepers generally sleep with knees bent, back curled slightly, and with their arms folded. Sleeping on your left side improves circulation to the heart and can ease heartburn and acid reflux.

- THE PROBLEM: Other than the skin on your face getting smashed into the pillow, there are actually no other problems with this sleep position! It is one of the healthiest sleep positions to use because it complements the natural curve of the spine.

- THE SOLUTION: To make this position a little more comfortable, put a pillow between your knees to reduce the stress on your hips, back, and legs.

Now that you are aware of how different sleep positions can affect the quality of your sleep, give them each a try. If sleep position is not a problem, but you spend your nights tossing and turning because your mattress is old and worn out, visit us at the best furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks. We can help you find the perfect mattress for your sleep needs, and Slumberland Furniture can even outfit your entire bedroom if you are ready for a new look.
