Dining Collections to Fit the Family

The kitchen is the heart of the home, but the dining room is the heartbeat. There are so many studies that show how important it is to sit down and eat together, not just for the social and relationship aspect, but even for the health benefits as well. Several studies are showing that families who eat together are twice as likely to eat their five servings of fruits and vegetables.

Whether you still have a young family, or your kids are out of the house and come back on weekends and holidays - having a place to gather and eat can be invaluable. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you pick out the perfect dining set at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Shape

The most basic part of your dining table is going to be the shape, but it’s also the most important. The most popular choices are rectangular, round, and square. Round shapes foster a greater feeling of togetherness, while rectangular tables are able to fit more people around them. Square shapes are the most unique of the three, and provide a great design element, along with a more modern feel. Need to have the option for more space? Some tables offer a leaf extension or a butterfly leaf that hides underneath.

Size

When trying to decide which table size you need, you want to keep in mind how much room the table will take up with occupants. Push each chair out a few feet and then measure the total distance across the setting to get a realistic idea of what the table will really take up in your room.

You should also keep in mind that many sets can also come with other pieces like buffets, hutches, servers, sideboards, and cupboards. These offer additional storage space and design flair, but also take up additional space, so make sure that you have plenty of room to accommodate everything.

Finish

After you’ve decided what you like in terms of shape and size, it’s time to determine the finish that works best in your home. The biggest thing to consider is if you have an active household. In other words, do you have kids and pets who also live in the space? With this info, you can determine the level of tolerance that the table will need to hold up to. Darker colors and finishes will tend to show nicks and scratches, watermarks and other unexplainable blemishes more quickly. Distressed finishes are not only incredibly trendy right now, but they are also great for hiding marks if you have an active family lifestyle!

Adding a Fall Flair to Your Home

We realize that it doesn’t exactly feel like fall at the Lake of the Ozarks just yet (yes, we’re looking at you 93ยบ and blazing hot out there), but it will be here before you know it! If you’re itching to get into the fall spirit with some pumpkin spice and flannels, maybe starting with your home is the best way to go. The first day of fall is September 23rd, so this weekend would be the perfect time to deck out your home or your vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks (especially because it’s still very much boating season down here!). Check out these fun ways to add fall flair to your luxury lake home.

Natural

If you’re planning on decorating your home with fall-themed items, the best way to go about it is using things that are themed by Mother Nature herself. Twigs, branches, flowers, and even hay or straw can be the perfect way to set the stage. Bowls of chestnuts, acorns, or pinecones can be really pretty (if you don’t have young kids anyway), and they have a very natural and beautiful appeal to them. You may not want to bring these items straight from the outdoors, but you can find a variety of styles at your local home decor stores at the Lake of the Ozarks. These items come in the perfect autumn shades, as well, because they basically invented fall!

Pumpkins

While you may not (or maybe you are!) ready to indulge in all things pumpkin on your menu, it’s still a great time to start scattering these bright orange gourds around your home. You don’t even have to carve the pumpkins, that’s is primarily for Halloween - if you are looking for a luxury style, a pumpkin in all it’s natural glory can be perfect for your space. One pretty pumpkin can make a huge statement in a centerpiece on your table, or set on your bar - and when it starts to get old, you can go pick up another from your local grocery store for a few dollars and start over!

Candy Corn

Bear with us, having candy around the house sounds like it just invites trouble for your our waistlines - but Candy Corn is different. It’s one of those candies that for most are the perfect “in a pinch” sugary treats, but it’s not something that you binge on (though … we know that some of you wait all year for these festive fall candies - go you! But for the rest of us … ). Candy corn can be an easy way to incorporate the colors of fall without investing in and storing a bunch of decor - plus, candy corn isn’t going to rot on your counter or attract bugs. You can pour a bag of candy corn into a pretty vase or even a plain glass bowl, and then place a candle in the center - voila! A perfect easy centerpiece that takes just minutes and very little investment.

Firewood

One of these days, firewood will be needed (c’mon cool fall evenings!), and when they do, you’ll start seeing the firewood at the supermarkets. You can buy a bundle and place it in a magazine rack or basket. You can even just tie it with some thin rope and place it as your centerpiece, or even on the floor by a fireplace, or on the front steps of your home. It will have a faint aroma of wood that a candle can never achieve, and you’ll love it.

Falling for Fall

There’s something so cozy and welcoming about the fall season. Maybe it’s the fact that Thanksgiving is nestled quietly in the center, perhaps it’s the seasonal scents, or maybe it’s just that this change of seasons can make everyone take a deep breath after a busy summer season. Either way, we’re all about it. If you’re looking to decorate a Lake of the Ozarks home, stop by Slumberland at the Lake! We have WAY more than mattresses and furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we would love to help you create a space that is comfortable, welcoming, and beautiful. Happy fall ya’ll!

Great Sleep Routines & Habits for Kids

Sleep is a vital part of everyone’s ability to function throughout the day and live a healthy life. As adults, we see the importance of sleep because we can easily see the effects from the lack of it. However, children are a whole other story! They need their sleep the most, and yet you wouldn’t always believe it when it’s time to put them down to bed. As the school year has kicked off, the newness may beignet wear down, but that’s when your child’s sleep is the most important. Here are a few ways you can set up a good sleep habit for your child, and create a routine that everyone enjoys.

First Things First

Before we start talking about sleep routines, here are a few things to know about the sleep requirements for kids of different ages.

Toddlers 1-2 Years: 11-14 hours
Preschoolers 3-5: 10-13 hours
School-aged Children 6-13: 9-11 hours
Teenagers 14-17 years: 8-10 hours

Tips for Better Sleep

Whether your kids aren’t on a good routine, or you just need to tweak it a bit, here are a few tips to help kids develop better sleep habits for your kids.

Keep A Routine

Having a good bedtime is essential, but you have probably already heard all about that. Starting with a bath, pajamas brushing teeth, reading a few pages from a book - these are all great options and you can customize the routine in any way that you would like. Whatever you make of the ritual, just make sure that it’s consistent so that your children know what to expect every night.

Cut Down on Electronics

It’s important to restrict electronics at least an hour before bed. This will include the computer, phone, and television. Electronic screen actives can be stimulating to the brain and interfere with falling and staying asleep.

Check the Temperature of the Room

Did you know that if a room is too warm, stuffy, or bright, it can make it hard for your children to fall asleep, as well as maintain sleep through the night? Keep the temperature low and invest in some better blackout curtains to help control the lighting in the room.

Make Time in the Evening to Visit

Grade schoolers especially need to get time with their parents. This is a great time to chat about their day, their interests, their friends. This can also be a time to let them get things off their chest, process, and problem solve - all things which will help create a space for better sleep!

Caffeine is in What??

It’s no surprise caffeine is in coffee and soda, but did you know that it can be hidden in other foods as well? Chocolate, many types of tea, and even some non-cola sodas. If it’s close to bedtime and your child gets hungry, try to find foods that aren’t caffeinated or high in sugar to help make sleep easier.

Create a Cozy Atmosphere

The more comfortable your kids are, the more relaxed they will be and the easier it will be for them to fall asleep. Comfortable mattresses can make a huge difference in keeping these rooms comfortable. If you are looking for kids mattresses at the Lake of the Ozarks, Slumberland at the Lake can help you find the perfect fit. Stop by our furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks to find not only a mattress but a bed frame to fit.

Creating a comfortable room can a wonderful way to help improve sleep, and we have the tools to assist. Need to outfit the rest of the space? We have pillows, decor, bedding sets, and more! We hope your children have a wonderful school year, and we look forward to helping you create the perfect space for them!
