Spring Tasks For Your Home

It won’t be long until summer will kick into full swing and the Lake area will become a hub of excitement. With summer vacations and warm weather getaways on the horizon, now is a great time to make sure that your home improvement projects are out of the way in your vacation home! Here are a few things you can do to get ready for the warm weather, fun vacations, and weekends spent at your favorite summer getaway.

Let In the Light

As the darkness of winter is fading, it’s time to welcome the sunshine. Start by trimming back any bushes or tree limbs that are blocking the sunlight. You’ll want to avoid removing too much shade from your lawn, however, especially if the plants and landscaping are shade-lovers. You can also install screen doors to help increase the light and bring in the fresh air.

Start Spring Cleaning

Both the interiors and exteriors can benefit from a good spring cleaning. You can use a pressure washer outside to clean off the sidewalks and porch to get rid of winter grime. When you clean the indoors, save the floors for last and get all of the other surfaces, cabinets, and appliances cleaned first.

Love the Landscaping

Giving your yard and outdoor spaces a once over can be a great way to prepare for those nice summer evenings. You can pull out and replant shrubs that have died, replace the mulch, give your plants a boost with fertilizer, and check on the irrigation systems.

Prepare for Summer Guests

The highlight of a summer home is that you can bring guests to come and enjoy time with you. Make sure that you have plenty of places for your guests to sleep and relax! Check over the guest bedroom, clean it, fluff the pillows, and maybe even change up the decor if you haven’t changed it in a while. If you don’t have a guest room established, Slumberland Furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help. We carry bedroom furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks, as well as bedroom decor and more!

Don’t Forget Outdoor Dining

Now is a great time to clean up your patio chairs and check the fabric on the cushions for holes and stains. You can also look for rust on your patio furniture and repair as needed. Take a look at your “outdoor kitchen” and make sure that you have all of the supplies you need. From the grill to the charcoal and propane, stock up and get ready for that beautiful warm weekend!

Spruce Up the Furniture and Decor

It can be easy to forget about redecorating your lake home, but if you walk in and find that you would like to change things up - Slumberland at the Lake has got your back. From the larger pieces of furniture to the smaller details, we have it all.

It won’t be long until the spring and summer months come in with their breath of fresh air, so why not create that same freshness in your home. Ready to create a new look in your vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks? Slumberland at the Lake is here to help!

7 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Vacation Home

We can hardly bring ourselves to say it, but spring is in the air! There have been some beautiful days on the calendar recently, and it just makes us get all giddy for warm weather, boat rides, family BBQs, and summer nights where everyone crashes exhaustedly into their comfy beds before doing it all again tomorrow. With spring just around the corner, now is a great time to tackle Spring Cleaning, and getting your home ship-shape before the fun season starts! Here are a few tips from Slumberland Furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks on how you can tackle these big projects and be ready in just a few weeks.

1. Freshen Up The Essentials

Now is a great time to take a look at the items in your vacation home and decide whether they need to be replaced. We’re talking about old toilet brushes, bed linens, sponges, towels, rugs, shower curtain liners, etc. Nothing can make a space feel fresh and new like some fresh and new essentials!

2. Wash Home Accessories

Depending on the material it’s made of, take some time to wash all of your knick backs and decor pieces. This obviously doesn’t apply to wooden or fabric items, or anything very delicate. However, if they are glass, china, plastic or metal, some water and a bit of soap can do wonders. Washing instead of dusting can help the items to stay cleaner longer, and they will have a special shine when you are done!

3. Keep An Eye Open for Pests

You haven’t been around for a few months, and this is the perfect time for rodents and pests to take up residence. Signs to look for are dead bugs lying around, damage on the walls, cracks, and insect droppings. The same applies to rodents as well, if you are finding any droppings or nest materials, it’s time to call in the pest control specialists!

4. Clean Surfaces

If it has a surface, it needs to be cleaned. This can be said of doorknobs, light switches, door frames, counters, cabinets, even the walls! Everything needs a good wipe-down, as all surfaces can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Grab your favorite surface disinfectant and get busy!

5. Wipe Down Vents & Ceiling Fans

You know you’ve looked up there, and after a whole winter of nothing stirring the dust bunnies, those ceiling fans need a little extra attention. Just a simple wipe down of the blades should suffice, but if it’s really dirty, you may need to wipe down the fan unit as well - but be careful. You can also take some time to remove the air duct covers from the walls and floors and use a brush to clean the grates of your HVAC system. You may need to refer to a user’s manual to make sure you don’t need to do anything special other than powering down the unit before starting.

6. Detail the Appliances

There’s nothing that is going to make you feel grimier than opening the oven and finding last year’s BBQ baked onto the bottom, or opening the fridge and smelling a strange sort of “stank” that you don’t recognize. Taking some time to clean out your appliances can be a fast way to show yourself some love and make a really great and clean place to vacation.

7. Clean Up Outside

When we have one of those beautiful 70 degree days in February that we love so much, this is a great time to tackle the outside of your home. You can hose down the patio walkway, and maybe even the outside of your home. If anything needs a paint job, prepare for it now so that when the weather is right you have all of your supplies ready. You can also take a look at the landscaping and start removing any of the dead plants that are no longer needed.

Spring is Springing!

According to the groundhog, spring is coming early this year, so now is a great time to start getting ready for her! After you finish cleaning, it’s a great time to also finish up any renovation projects you’ve been putting off as well! Need to find a new couch for the living room or a new mattress for the guest bedroom? Slumberland at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help you make your lake home comfy and cozy. We have an amazing selection of mattresses at the Lake of the Ozarks, as well as luxury furniture in Osage Beach, MO. So whether you need something for the bedroom, bathroom, living room, or kitchen, we have a combination of styles, colors, and textures to help create the perfect look for your home!

The Making of a Modern Farmhouse

The farmhouse style is taking on a bit of a metamorphosis in 2020, and we’re loving the tweaks! Imagine the coziness of a farmhouse combining with the structure of a modern home, and you’ll have what’s known as the Modern Farmhouse. If you are wanting to create this in your home, here are a few tips straight from Slumberland Furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks to help you get started, as well as a few pieces that can make it possible!

Keeping It Neutral

Cool or warm neutrals are still trending when choosing the colors for your home. In the past, everything was about crisp white and strong black with some gray in the middle. This year it won’t be uncommon for you to see a palette that goes from beige and cream to taupe and tan. Cool or warm neutrals can create a fresh and airy look which creates the perfect look for a Modern Farmhouse. Looking for the perfect piece? Check out this sofa for your modern farmhouse!

Consider Contrast

What sets the modern farmhouse apart is that it is a contrast between styles. Contrast generally refers to colors, but this time, think of it as a contrast between materials, textures, materials, and even colors. The farmhouse style is a nod to nature, while modern has a touch of industrial. This means you’ll be seeing natural fibers and rustic wood paired with sleek metal and glass. This can be an especially fun style to create in a home, and we look forward to helping your furnish a Lake of the Ozarks vacation home. Not sure where to start? Check out this bed!

Style & Comfort Combined

When choosing the furniture in your home, it’s important to get practical and focus on pieces that are designed for everyday use and comfort. If you aren’t the type who wants formal, fussy, and precious pieces, the modern farmhouse style is for you. When creating your luxury lake home style, you want a home that is meant to be lived in. It’s time to make memories and get comfortable because the furniture you’re going to choose is going to be the perfect combination. Check out this console table to keep things organized.

Making Space For Company

This is a biggy when planning your vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks. It’s important to have plenty of space for your guests, so creating a versatile guest room with twin beds that can be pushed together or stand-alone is a great solution. A modern farmhouse would be perfect with the Laguna twin metal bed, for an antique style that is still clean and modern.

Home Furnishing Trends in 2020

With a new year comes a “new you” or in our case, a new home style! New seasons bring about the desire for change, and this can be a strong impulse when you have the Christmas decorations freshly put away and your home looks empty and boring. If you’re beginning to feel like a change is in order, whether in your home or your vacation house at the Lake of the Ozarks, Slumberland at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help! Here are a few trends you will notice popping up in homes this year, and how we can help you achieve the look you desire!

Timeless and Evolving

One popular thing you’ll see right now is really honing in on your personal style. From a complete renovation of your home to simply changing up the furniture, this season is when people are really thinking long term with their pieces and choosing furniture and accessories that really mean something to them.

Country Chic

The typical farmhouse style may be waning a bit, but the natural and casual style is still here. Think of farmhouse meets sophisticated, with a bit of European-inspired flair and you’ll have a good idea of what will be in style in 2020. It’s basically a fresh take on a British farmhouse without a stuffy air. Classic prints, some whimsy, as well as antique details will all be found in homes throughout 2020.

No More Neutrals

The neutral shades we have been used to are being replaced by warm colors, saturated hues, and jewel tones. You will find these colors on cabinetry, walls, accents, and furniture! Many places are predicting shades of pink as well as soft peachy corals, terra cotta, and other shades that make you feel grounded with a touch of softness.

Patterns On Everything

Patterns are going to be huge this year, and especially layering the patterns on everything. From tabletop and textiles designs to pillows and rugs there are no rules and nothing is safe from the pattern explosion!

Naturally Luxurious

In a time when people are more conscious about where things are made, how they are made, and even the materials they are made from, natural materials will be making a strong appearance this year - but with a luxurious spin. Marble will be popping up on all types of surfaces and accents, as well as linen, plaster, lime wash, cane or raffia, rustic woods and more.

Unique Area Rugs

Because this year is all about patterns and textures, this will also affect the area rugs that are being chosen. Last year a trend was obscure shaped rugs, and it’s still continuing this year, but with the added bonus of unexpected materials being woven into rugs.

Making Your Home Beautiful limewash

Whether you want to redesign a vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks or complete and long-term project on your primary residence, 2020 is the year to accomplish this goal! Slumberland Furniture has an enormous line of furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we can find something to match any style or color scheme. Looking for something specific? Let us help! We look forward to helping you create the home of your dreams in 2020 - let’s get started!

Ways to Prepare Your Home for Winter

At Slumberland Furniture, we know how important your home is to you. Whether you live full-time at the Lake or you have a vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks, it’s still important to consider who your home will fair through the winter and get it prepared. While we focus on the indoors through beautiful furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks, we know that the outdoors is just as important. Here are a few tips to help get your home ready for the impending winter cold and weather.

Install Weatherstripping

It’s time to check your home’s exterior doors for cold air leaks. You’ll start from the inside of the house, and you can move a lit candle around door frames and windows. If the flame blows toward you, then there is a draft. You can seal up drafty doors by installing foam or felt weatherstripping inside the door frame.

Seal Attic Leaks

Do you know that as much as 30% of your heated or cooled air could be leaking outdoors? It’s time to find and seal the gaps that are allowing your “paid air” to escape. You can pull back the attic insulation to find and seal cutouts in drywall for the electrical fixtures, pipes, fans, and outlets. You can also look at your wiring, chimneys, flues, vent stacks, and ducts, and seal them from the inside.

Close the Damper

If you leave the fireplace damper open, the heated or cooled air will fly up the chimney. Make it a habit to always shut the flue after the fireplace has cooled down. As the temperatures get colder, you’ll probably be using your fireplace more, so this can be a really easy task to forget.

Insulate the Attic (More!)

This is a task that is best left to the professionals, but if you haven’t checked the attic insulation in a while, or you don’t even know when it was installed last - this could be a good year to make sure that it’s up to speed. So much warm air can seep out of your home through the attic.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Did you know that a programmable thermostat can save up to $180 a year on fuel costs, according to EnergyStar? The thermostat can save fuel because it can automatically lower or raise your one’s temperature while you’re away. It can also keep your temperatures consistent, saving fuel.

Seal Furnace Ducts

Your heating ducts can waste 20-30% of the heated air they carry. Leaky heating ducts mean higher utility bills and a house that’s harder to keep warm. The appliances like water heaters and furnaces can cause the buildup of dangerous gases like carbon monoxide through back-drafting. Sealing the leaks can reduce the risk, but you will want to check with professionals before digging in.

Reverse Your Ceiling Fans

When the weather gets cold and you use your furnace, it’s time to reverse your fan blades in a clockwise direction. The fan will produce an updraft and push the heated air down into the room. If you have high vaulted ceilings (which are incredibly common at the Lake), you may find that this can even allow you to turn down your thermostat by a degree or two for greater energy savings!

Creating a Home that is Beautiful and Warm!

Winter is here and it will be for a few months, which means that NOW is the time to make things cozy and comfortable. While your busy filling in the holes and making sure there aren’t drafts - we can help you add warmth in your family and personal spaces. With our many accessories and accents, you’re sure to find the right color and texture to help create your space.

70s Scandi

Earthy color palettes, geometric prints, and natural materials are just the beginning of creating this mellow yet cheery style. Simple lines and fun colors are a must. You’ll find plenty of indoor plants throughout these spaces, as well as rich accent colors and bold lighting accents. The philosophy of “less is more” will apply, though, so pick and choose your accessories carefully and thoughtfully before filling a space with too much.

Trying to create the look? Try using a piece like the Rex Blue Accent Chair for a sitting room or bedroom. The Uptown 5 piece Gray Ladder Back Dining Set would be the perfect complement for a dining room.

Mix & Match Pattern

If you are trying to combat the minimalist look in your vacation home, patterns are going to be a MUST. Not just one pattern, but a combination of beautiful styles that both complement but stand alone. What’s the key? Keep the color palette the same tonally. You will want your room to be balanced visually, and you can use the accessories and even walls to make this statement. Solid furniture can act as the perfect blank canvas for your patterned artwork to shine through. Need accessories? Slumberland at the Lake of the Ozarks has pillows, rugs, linens and more to help make your beautiful furniture shine.

Mustard

This rustic and vintage hue has been trending for a while now, but it’s really hot this summer. You don’t have to just use small pops of the color anymore, either. Look for bold ways to make this shad appear in your home.

Raw & Unfinished

Wood is definitely a hot buy for this summer, especially when you choose classic designs with an unfinished look. These pieces can stand the test of time and are both easy to use in many different designs, but classic for all types of styles.

Practical Size

The size of a table can have a big impact on your space. If you don't have a designated dining room, a traditional table may be cumbersome in your vacation home. Think about your eating style as you make your table selection. Select a table that meets your seating and space needs around your lake home.

Flexible Seating

Your lake home may have an influx of visitors in the summer - especially on holiday weekends. Whether you have friends visiting or family getting together, you'll want to ensure you have enough seating options for everyone to dine together. While having outdoor seating is a fun way to unwind after a day - it's important to have indoor dining options if the weather isn't ideal. We have a number of table options that expand to meet your demand for more seating! Stop by our store today to see what we have in stock and ready to be placed in your lake home dining room or kitchen!

Get Creative

If you don't typically sit down as a family to eat on vacation, you may be able to get away with a more creative dining option. Barstools by a kitchen island may be the way to go for your unique vacation home and eating habits. It's important to find the right dining solution for you, your family, and your guests.
