Mattresses Explained - Know What You Are Buying

Innerspring Mattresses

A series of coils (or springs) makes up an innerspring mattress.  The coils provide support, while various foams and fibers create a comfort layer over the top of them. This is the most common mattress type, making up over 80% of all mattresses on the market today.  

The coil count, which is a phrase that you will hear while mattress shopping, is the number of coils in the mattress.  The coil counts for a mattress should be at least:

• Full-size:  300
• Queen-size:  375
• Kind:  450

The coil count is actually not as important as the gauge of the coils.  This is what determines how firm and supportive that a particular mattress is.  A lower gauge number means a thicker spring and a firmer mattress.  The higher the number, the softer the mattress is, and it will move easier under pressure.  

Traditional Bonnell or Open Coil

The steel-wire coils in this mattress are tied together with wire.  This helps the mattress hold its shape.  The Bonnell-style has stood the test of time because people have been sleeping on them for more than 100 years!  These are available at a variety of price points, so they are very easy to purchase, even if you are on a budget.  They are incredibly durable, long-lasting, and supportive.  

Individually Wrapped or Pocket Coils 

Unlike traditional Bonnell-style mattresses, pocket coils are not tied together, but independent from each other.  Each coil is inside its own fabric pocket, and it can move individually without disturbing the other coils around it.  This is a great choice for people that share a bed.  These mattresses are durable and long-lasting, with the added bonus that they contour to your body and provide comfortable pressure relief.          




Foam Mattresses

These mattresses are wonderful for both conforming support and pressure relief.  The support here comes from a variety of foam materials instead of spring coils. This type of mattress doesn't push back like an innerspring mattress, but instead conforms to your body.  You seem to sink right in.  

Memory Foam
