It's natural to automatically search out your favorite color when you are shopping, but that's not necessarily the best strategy when it comes to furniture. A color that you don't normally lean towards may be the perfect one for the mood you want to set in a particular room.
Colors behave in three basice ways: active, passive, and neutral. Bedrooms should feel relaxing and serene, living rooms should be happy and inviting, and dining rooms should feel appetizing. Here is a list of how most colors basically make a person feel.
RED
Red is a color that promotes high energy. It works well in rooms where a lot of activity happens. It can stimulate conversation in a living room, and touches of it are great for productivity in a home office. It has been known to increase heart rates and raise blood pressure though, so if your job is already stressful, limit its presence in the office.
YELLOW
Reminiscent of sunshine, yellow in small doses can bring cheer and happiness to a room, but an entirely yellow room tends to cause feelings of frustration. A yellow chair in a living room is an energizing touch, or add a rug full of yellow tones. It is also wonderful in kitchens.
ORANGE
Excitement, enthusiasm, and energy are evoked from the color orange. If you have a room set aside for exercise or creative endeavors, this is an excellent color to include. You can easily bring it in with artwork, side tables, or throw pillows.
BLUE
Blue brings on feelings of calmness and serenity. It has been found to bring down blood pressure and slow the heart rate. Blue accents and linens are perfect for sleep in a bedroom. This is one color that actually works beautifully in every room. Be wary of the shade, though, because some blues can bring on a chilly feeling. Stick with the warmer hues.
GREEN
This color is said to be the most restful for the eye. Mixed from cheerful yellow and calming blue, it also works well for any room in the house. It causes feelings of restfulness and tranquility. Because of the fact that it has been said to promote fertility, many people wanting to start families love it for the bedroom.
PURPLE
Due to its relation to passion, purple is also a good bedroom color. It is often associated with luxury and sophistication, and it is thought of as a color of royalty. An impressive, elegant room can be put together with dramatic purple accents.
Mixing more than one color in a room can work beautifully, but we suggest that you use no more than three in one room. Any more may cause a very cluttered feeling.
