Creating a Productive Home Office

Studies are showing that more than 5% of Americans are working from home now, and that number has been on the rise in the last twenty years. As more and more people find working from home to be the best option for them, you will find that the home office is becoming more commonplace. A home office doesn’t have to be a large space, but it does need to be a place where you can store equipment, work on projects, and stay organized. If you need a home office makeover, here are a few tips to help keep things organized, productive, and beautiful in your space - and how Slumberland at the Lake of the Ozarks can help!

Use Pinterest Realistically

You want to use these resources for inspiration, but remember that an office in a magazine may not be as practical as an office in real life. Tiny vintage desks are cute, but they may not be practical when you have huge projects to spread across them, or need plenty of space for your paperwork. You also want to consider the colors in your space carefully. While bright, bold walls may be perfect online, you may find that those colors are distracting. In fact, when there is too much environmental stimulation it can actually be its own form of distraction. Keep your colors toned down, and use color in places like your rug, accessories, and even some framed art. It spices up space without overwhelming it.

Think Ergonomically

The type of work that you do will determine how long you are spending in your office, but no matter what, you still want your space to be comfortable. This means that ergonomic planning will be helpful when choosing furniture. You want the top of your computer screen to be at eye level or a little bit below. You want to position your keyboard so that your forearms are parallel to the floor and adjust your chair so that your feet rest firmly on the floor or a footrest. Don’t be afraid to make an investment in your chair - it’s what is going to keep you at your desk for longer!

Fill The Space with Natural Light

When laying out your office space, make sure that you aren’t sticking your desk in the darkest corner of the room - think outside of the box! Place your desk parallel to the panes of a window instead. This will give you a good reason to turn away and look from your computer every so often to take in the scenery. It can also make for a much more relaxing workspace, and make your desk feel inviting instead of in a cave.

But Don’t Neglect Lamps
Even with natural light, you will still want additional lighting for the darker hours of the day, or even just cloudy days. Overhead lighting is typically uninviting and unwelcoming - but a few table lamps can offer a nice soft glow with plenty of inspiring possibilities.

Utilize Creative Storage
Filing cabinets aren’t always attractive, but you will still need a place to put papers. Wall storage, magazine type racks, or even children’s library-style display shelves can help you keep papers organized and off of your desk without hiding them away in a drawer. Need some bookcases for your space? Make sure that you choose bookcases that are large enough that you won’t need to overstuff them, but still attractive and artful enough to be a backdrop for video conferences.

Personalize The Space With Thought

You’re working in a home office, which means that you can use items to personalize your space that are not available in a cubicle. This means that changing out candles or essential oils for seasonal scents every so often is a fun way to personalize your space and also intrigue your senses! Definitely put up inspirational photos, quotes, family pictures, and more. Just remember that when things aren’t changed out routinely, they become “like wallpaper” and just start to blend in. Change out these items regularly to keep your space fresh.

Dining Collections to Fit the Family

The kitchen is the heart of the home, but the dining room is the heartbeat. There are so many studies that show how important it is to sit down and eat together, not just for the social and relationship aspect, but even for the health benefits as well. Several studies are showing that families who eat together are twice as likely to eat their five servings of fruits and vegetables.

Whether you still have a young family, or your kids are out of the house and come back on weekends and holidays - having a place to gather and eat can be invaluable. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you pick out the perfect dining set at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Shape

The most basic part of your dining table is going to be the shape, but it’s also the most important. The most popular choices are rectangular, round, and square. Round shapes foster a greater feeling of togetherness, while rectangular tables are able to fit more people around them. Square shapes are the most unique of the three, and provide a great design element, along with a more modern feel. Need to have the option for more space? Some tables offer a leaf extension or a butterfly leaf that hides underneath.

Size

When trying to decide which table size you need, you want to keep in mind how much room the table will take up with occupants. Push each chair out a few feet and then measure the total distance across the setting to get a realistic idea of what the table will really take up in your room.

You should also keep in mind that many sets can also come with other pieces like buffets, hutches, servers, sideboards, and cupboards. These offer additional storage space and design flair, but also take up additional space, so make sure that you have plenty of room to accommodate everything.

Finish

After you’ve decided what you like in terms of shape and size, it’s time to determine the finish that works best in your home. The biggest thing to consider is if you have an active household. In other words, do you have kids and pets who also live in the space? With this info, you can determine the level of tolerance that the table will need to hold up to. Darker colors and finishes will tend to show nicks and scratches, watermarks and other unexplainable blemishes more quickly. Distressed finishes are not only incredibly trendy right now, but they are also great for hiding marks if you have an active family lifestyle!

Time to Eat!

At Slumberland Furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks, we love to help families of all shapes and sizes find the perfect pieces of furniture for their home. Adding a Fall Flair to Your Home

We realize that it doesn’t exactly feel like fall at the Lake of the Ozarks just yet (yes, we’re looking at you 93º and blazing hot out there), but it will be here before you know it! If you’re itching to get into the fall spirit with some pumpkin spice and flannels, maybe starting with your home is the best way to go. The first day of fall is September 23rd, so this weekend would be the perfect time to deck out your home or your vacation home at the Lake of the Ozarks (especially because it’s still very much boating season down here!). Check out these fun ways to add fall flair to your luxury lake home.

Natural

If you’re planning on decorating your home with fall-themed items, the best way to go about it is using things that are themed by Mother Nature herself. Twigs, branches, flowers, and even hay or straw can be the perfect way to set the stage. Bowls of chestnuts, acorns, or pinecones can be really pretty (if you don’t have young kids anyway), and they have a very natural and beautiful appeal to them. You may not want to bring these items straight from the outdoors, but you can find a variety of styles at your local home decor stores at the Lake of the Ozarks. These items come in the perfect autumn shades, as well, because they basically invented fall!

Pumpkins

While you may not (or maybe you are!) ready to indulge in all things pumpkin on your menu, it’s still a great time to start scattering these bright orange gourds around your home. You don’t even have to carve the pumpkins, that’s is primarily for Halloween - if you are looking for a luxury style, a pumpkin in all it’s natural glory can be perfect for your space. One pretty pumpkin can make a huge statement in a centerpiece on your table, or set on your bar - and when it starts to get old, you can go pick up another from your local grocery store for a few dollars and start over!

Candy Corn

Bear with us, having candy around the house sounds like it just invites trouble for your our waistlines - but Candy Corn is different. It’s one of those candies that for most are the perfect “in a pinch” sugary treats, but it’s not something that you binge on (though … we know that some of you wait all year for these festive fall candies - go you! But for the rest of us … ). Candy corn can be an easy way to incorporate the colors of fall without investing in and storing a bunch of decor - plus, candy corn isn’t going to rot on your counter or attract bugs. You can pour a bag of candy corn into a pretty vase or even a plain glass bowl, and then place a candle in the center - voila! A perfect easy centerpiece that takes just minutes and very little investment.

Firewood

One of these days, firewood will be needed (c’mon cool fall evenings!), and when they do, you’ll start seeing the firewood at the supermarkets. You can buy a bundle and place it in a magazine rack or basket. You can even just tie it with some thin rope and place it as your centerpiece, or even on the floor by a fireplace, or on the front steps of your home. It will have a faint aroma of wood that a candle can never achieve, and you’ll love it.

Falling for Fall

There’s something so cozy and welcoming about the fall season. Maybe it’s the fact that Thanksgiving is nestled quietly in the center, perhaps it’s the seasonal scents, or maybe it’s just that this change of seasons can make everyone take a deep breath after a busy summer season. Either way, we’re all about it. If you’re looking to decorate a Lake of the Ozarks home, stop by Slumberland at the Lake! We have WAY more than mattresses and furniture at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we would love to help you create a space that is comfortable, welcoming, and beautiful. Happy fall ya’ll!

Great Sleep Routines & Habits for Kids

Sleep is a vital part of everyone’s ability to function throughout the day and live a healthy life. As adults, we see the importance of sleep because we can easily see the effects from the lack of it. However, children are a whole other story! They need their sleep the most, and yet you wouldn’t always believe it when it’s time to put them down to bed. As the school year has kicked off, the newness may beignet wear down, but that’s when your child’s sleep is the most important. Here are a few ways you can set up a good sleep habit for your child, and create a routine that everyone enjoys.

First Things First

Before we start talking about sleep routines, here are a few things to know about the sleep requirements for kids of different ages.

Toddlers 1-2 Years: 11-14 hours
Preschoolers 3-5: 10-13 hours
School-aged Children 6-13: 9-11 hours
Teenagers 14-17 years: 8-10 hours

Tips for Better Sleep

Whether your kids aren’t on a good routine, or you just need to tweak it a bit, here are a few tips to help kids develop better sleep habits for your kids.

Keep A Routine

Having a good bedtime is essential, but you have probably already heard all about that. Starting with a bath, pajamas brushing teeth, reading a few pages from a book - these are all great options and you can customize the routine in any way that you would like. Whatever you make of the ritual, just make sure that it’s consistent so that your children know what to expect every night.

Cut Down on Electronics

It’s important to restrict electronics at least an hour before bed. This will include the computer, phone, and television. Electronic screen actives can be stimulating to the brain and interfere with falling and staying asleep.

Check the Temperature of the Room

Did you know that if a room is too warm, stuffy, or bright, it can make it hard for your children to fall asleep, as well as maintain sleep through the night? Keep the temperature low and invest in some better blackout curtains to help control the lighting in the room.

Make Time in the Evening to Visit

Grade schoolers especially need to get time with their parents. This is a great time to chat about their day, their interests, their friends. This can also be a time to let them get things off their chest, process, and problem solve - all things which will help create a space for better sleep!

Caffeine is in What??

It’s no surprise caffeine is in coffee and soda, but did you know that it can be hidden in other foods as well? Chocolate, many types of tea, and even some non-cola sodas. If it’s close to bedtime and your child gets hungry, try to find foods that aren’t caffeinated or high in sugar to help make sleep easier.

Create a Cozy Atmosphere

The more comfortable your kids are, the more relaxed they will be and the easier it will be for them to fall asleep. Comfortable mattresses can make a huge difference in keeping these rooms comfortable. If you are looking for kids mattresses at the Lake of the Ozarks, Slumberland at the Lake can help you find the perfect fit. Stop by our furniture store at the Lake of the Ozarks to find not only a mattress but a bed frame to fit.

Creating a comfortable room can a wonderful way to help improve sleep, and we have the tools to assist. Need to outfit the rest of the space? We have pillows, decor, bedding sets, and more! We hope your children have a wonderful school year, and we look forward to helping you create the perfect space for them!

6 Home Decor Styles That Are Trending NOW!

This year has been racing by, and with holidays coming up, you’re going to blink and it will be 2020. If you want to plan a redesign for your home, before all of the company arrives, now is a great time to start. Changing seasons and upcoming family events in your home make for the perfect excuse to get everything spic and span. However, because styles are ever-changing, it’s already time to look at the up and coming themes for the next year. Make your home the lead in trends with these amazing decor styles that will be on point next year.

Dividing Spaces with Welcoming Environments

Open spaces have been a huge part of the recent design aspects, however, we’re already starting to notice a changing trend. As people are becoming more introspective as well as focused on their relationships, this is also invoking a change in the purpose of a space. Instead of having one big open room, it’s becoming more popular to create small and welcoming environments within. You can still make this happen with larger spaces by rearranging the furniture to create intimate nooks, cozy places to create, and areas where conversation can be contained instead of opened up to all.

Gray Isn’t Going Anywhere

Gray has been a raging color for several years now, and it’s still going to remain a popular shade. It invokes more warmth than white but can pair with virtually any style or color that the designer would like to incorporate. You can create a space that is easily converted no matter what your style becomes in the next few months. Go with a lighter gray if you want a space to be clean and whimsical, choose a darker gray for moodier rooms with more emotion.

Woodn’t You Love to Know

Natural elements are going to be a huge hit over the next several seasons, but wood is going to beat them all. Everything from your accents, to your furniture, and even art will include the warmth of wood. This is an easy home design at the Lake of the Ozarks to incorporate because it has a natural nod towards nautical. Look for driftwood pieces that make a statement, and wooden accented furniture to tie everything together.

White Washed … Wallpaper?

Wallpaper was a huge “no” not that long ago, but it’s slowly starting to creep back into the homes of popular designers. It’s done tastefully, not overused, and the patterns are chosen from a select style that is really hitting the mark for the next few seasons. You can choose a delicate pattern that doesn’t overtake a space, or you can choose a bold accent wall that really makes the room pop. The possibilities are endless, and the pattern choices make this such a fun way to add a creative pop to your rooms.

Bold is Back

Bold colors and patterns are making a come back in home design. While we aren’t anticipating the avocado green sinks to come back in style next year, you will notice that bold colors and patterns (definitely a nod to the ’60s and ’70s) will be making graceful appearances in home design. Geometric patterns have been trending for a while now, and they aren’t going anywhere yet.

Mixing Metals

Along with the other natural elements that are going to be invited into the spaces, mixing metals is going to be another fun trend to try out. Every season, there has been one trending over the other, but next year it’s time to bring out all of the stops. This means that your faucet doesn’t have to match your doorknobs, and your kitchen drawer pulls don’t need to match the bar stools. You may still want to keep the limit to two finishes, but if you can pull off a third without the room getting to random - go for it!

Home Decor at the Lake of the Ozarks

Slumberland at the Lake of the Ozarks is here to help you create all of your design dreams come true. We don’t just care about the style, though, we also make comfort a priority. From cozy chairs to the most luxurious mattresses, it’s all about the way you feel when you use the pieces. Furniture is bold and beautiful, it’s going to speak about your space the loudest, but the accents and the smaller details are what really tie everything together. We carry it all because we know how important it is to have a one-stop-shop for all of your home interior pieces at the Lake of the Ozarks. Don’t forget that we have an AMAZING sale happening RIGHT NOW for Labor Day, and we want to see you! Stop by and let our fantastic team show you which pieces would be perfect in your space. We look forward to helping you create your home.
