How to Clean Microfiber Upholstery

When you first get your new couch or chair home from our Lake of the Ozarks furniture store, it is beautifully fresh, clean, and new. If you have a house full of people constantly using those pieces of furniture, it's bound to lose that "new" look over time. Spills and everyday wear can make your once pristine piece of furniture start looking old before its time.

There is always a way to refresh your Slumberland Furniture purchases and bring back that look they had when you first brought them home. Today we have a few tips for cleaning your microfiber furniture. It's a very popular and comfortable fabric made of polyester and nylon fibers. Here is how to keep it looking its best.

First of all, check the tag. There are different types of microfiber requiring slightly different cleaning techniques. 

• W = use a water based cleaning solution
• S = use a solvent based cleaning solution
• S-W = either may be used
• X = vacuum only

Vacuuming 

The best way to keep dirt from getting ground into your furniture is to vacuum it regularly. A bristled upholstery brush works the best. You can also brush the microfiber with a soft, nylon-bristled brush to keep it soft and looking good. 

Cleaning 

Microfiber is made to repel water, but you still need to take care of any spills as quickly as possible. Dab, never rub, with a white cloth. This will pull the spill up and off of the material rather than rubbing it in. 

If a stain or watermark happens to form, you can use rubbing alcohol on it. Fill a spray bottle with it, lightly spritz the area, and gently rub it with a white cloth or sponge in a color similar to your microfiber. Let it air dry, then brush it with a dry, nylon-bristled brush.  

If you have the "W" type of microfiber, you can wash it with dishwashing liquid. Gently rub in a circular motion until the stain is gone. You can then dab the suds away. Working in sections is the best way to keep your piece of furniture from absorbing too much water at once. Once again, after is is dry, brush the microfiber. 

Staying on top of spills before they can stain your furniture is the easiest way to keep your microfiber upholstery looking its best. No matter what type of cleaning solution you use, always test a small inconspicuous area first to make sure it will not cause worse damage.
